Acne can occur at any age, though it is most common in the teen years. It’s caused by the overproduction of oils within the layers of skin. With whiteheads, bacteria and dead skin cells build up in hair follicles and the infection leads to the pus that pushes against the skin, causing the white appearance.
Blackheads form when the hair follicle is open and able to receive oxygen, but the dead skin cells and oil are still trapped within the hair follicle. With either form, the unsightly appearance on the skin can make you feel self-conscious, lower your self-esteem, and even lead to bullying by your peers.
