The media inundate us with images of the “perfect” body. While it is widely known that the use of Photoshop runs rampant in the entertainment and advertising industry, many people subconsciously take these unrealistic beauty standards seriously, and try to emulate the images they see. While getting fit and feeling better about oneself are great goals, there are also disastrously negative sides to trying to look like the models and celebrities in advertising. Some beauty trends are downright unhealthy, such as the “thigh gap.” But how can you achieve a beautiful, healthy thigh contour, without slipping into dangerous fads?
What Is the Thigh Gap?
The thigh gap describes a possible contour of the thigh, which when the legs and knees are closed, there is a noticeable space between the two thighs. It is often seen in ultra-slim runway models, and it is an appearance many young women strive to achieve. However, most women’s bodies are not structurally designed to ever have such a gap, and many go to unhealthy lengths to try to achieve the thigh gap. While this contour is not unhealthy in and of itself, it is unhealthy when extreme skinniness is a way to achieve the look. It is often associated with dangerous eating disorders. Fortunately, there has been a cultural movement to banish the idolization of the thigh gap, and it seems to be working, as more negative attention is focused on the issue.
