Mastopexy, commonly called a breast lift, is a popular plastic surgery procedure that improves the shape and contour of a woman’s breasts. The surgical procedure helps restore the breasts to a youthful position, putting an end to sagging breasts and oversized or stretched areola. Per the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, more than 127,000 women underwent breast lift surgery in 2012, making it the sixth most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States.
What Does a Breast Lift Fix?
Over time, the breasts lose their shape and supple form. Breastfeeding, pregnancy, and weight gain and loss all impact the breasts, causing them to sag. Heredity, aging, and gravity can also make the breasts sag. For some women this change is minimal, but others end up with breasts that sag to such a point that it’s embarrassing. Another issue, especially after pregnancy and breastfeeding, is that the areola expands. Both the sagging and the enlarged areola can be addressed by a breast lift.
Note that a breast lift does not add size to the breasts. If you want larger breasts, a combination breast lift and breast augmentation is needed.
